Our Mission

1. Keeping students in school while preparing them for job training and their future. Results: Most of our students have become successful readers—the first in their families! Five of our students have completed job training and work in Phnom Penh. Two more are currently in training as of October 2016.

2. Introducing students to our loving Lord Jesus. Results: Students come to us asking questions about how to follow Jesus or for prayer about issues they face. We see fruit in their lives. We use discipline that is fair and non-violent and we see students making better choices.

3. Keeping kids from being sent into child labor or sexual exploitation. Results: Some students have left to go to work but the number of students who stay in school is increasing. The incidents of sexual trafficking are a very small fraction compared to national averages. Teen-age marriage has also reduced.

Our History

Bic and Colleen, discovered in 2007 that most children in these three communities were not in school. Their families wanted school for their children so these two women rented a building, moved in to live on the upper floor, and used the ground floor for the new school program. Bic began to teach Khmer, Bible, Math, and Vietnamese to 30+ children in December 2007. Heart of Hope was registered as a local NGO in Cambodia in July of 2012. As of 2021, we are in our 14th year of ministry to the same 3 local communities. We do not count numbers of students who follow Jesus but we see evidence as students pray and change their life choices. We are grateful that God has given us the honor of working with these children and families.

Our Community

Families in our community are predominantly Vietnamese and have traditionally earned a living by catching fish while some also work at garment factories or construction sites. As of June 2021 all houseboats (like the one you see in the photo) have been required to be removed from the rivers of Phnom Penh and our families have built or rented housing on the river banks. They will also need to find new sources of family income in months and years to come. This will be tough but more of the young adults (20-something year-olds) can read now due to having attended Heart of Hope classes in childhood. Past research has shown that Vietnamese children in Cambodia are at an especially high risk to be trafficked and exploited. These families are also still in danger due to the ongoing community violence, alcoholism, gambling, and drugs. Teaching families as well as the youth and children themselves how to avoid sexual exploitation, human trafficking, violence, and addictions is still essential to the welfare of these families.
